LESLAN Coordinators: Ali Bouzou, Mahaman Tidjani Alou, Apsatou Bagaya, Benedetta Rossi

 

Ali Bouzou (coordinateur national / national coordinator ):

M. Bouzou est secrétaire général de l’ONG Timidria et secrétaire exécutif du réseau ouest-africain de lutte contre l’esclavage chargé de lutter contre l’esclavage et la discrimination basée sur l’esclavage au Mali, en Mauritanie, au Tchad et au Niger. Il agit également en tant que rapporteur du groupe de travail national sur la lutte contre l’esclavage créé pour suivre la mise en œuvre des recommandations formulées par la rapporteure spéciale des Nations unies sur l’esclavage à la suite de sa visite au Niger en 2014. Il coordonne LESLAN à Niamey et dans les régions étudiées. Il facilite la mise en œuvre des activités de LESLAN dans les bureaux décentralisés de Timidria et avec le personnel local, et supervise l’organisation des événements du projet à Niamey.

Mr Bouzou is Secretary General of the NGO Timidria and Executive Secretary of the West African Antislavery Network for the fight against slavery and slavery-based discrimination in Mali, Mauritania, Chad and Niger. He is also acting as Rapporteur of the national Antislavery Taskforce created to follow-up the implementation of the recommendations made by the UN Special Rapporteur on Slavery following her visit to Niger in 2014. With the support of the Project Administrator Mr Ibrahim Inaboutou, he coordinates LESLAN’s activities in Niamey and in the case-study regions. He facilitates the implementation of LESLAN’s activities in Timidria’s decentralised offices and with local staff, and oversees the organisation of project events in Niamey.

 

Mahaman Tidjani Alou (coordinateur national Phase 1 / national coordinator Phase 1):

Le professeur Tidjani Alou est président de l’Anti-slavery task-force du Niger, conseiller spécial du président de la République, professeur d’université et ancien doyen de la faculté des sciences économiques et juridiques de l’université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey et chercheur au centre de recherche LASDEL. Il a plus de quarante ans d’expérience dans la coordination et la direction de recherches au Niger. Il facilite la coordination des activités de LESLAN avec les  principales institutions politiques et scientifiques du Niger. Il conseille et supervise les chercheurs de LESLAN dans leur recherches au Niger.

Professor Tidjani Alou is President of the national Antislavery Taskforce, Special Advisor to the President of the Republic, university professor and former Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Legal Sciences of Abdou Moumouni University of Niamey, and researcher at the LASDEL Research Centre. He has over forty years experience coordinating and directing research in Niger, including international research collaborations. He will facilitate the coordination of LESLAN’s activities with the policies of the main political and research institutions in Niger. He will advise LESLAN’s researchers in the process of applying for the required permits for conducting research in Niger and at the National Archives.

Apsatou Bagaya (co-ordinatrice nationale junior Phase 2/ junior national coordinator Phase 2)

Apsatou Bagaya est une photographe professionnelle nigérienne. Ayant vécu au Bénin et au Togo, elle est rentrée au Niger ou elle pratique la photographie sous toutes ses formes. Elle est une entrepreneure privée qui travaille à la commission d’un large éventail d’employeurs. Après avoir remporté le deuxième prix du concours d’art LESLAN, elle a rejoint l’équipe de LESLAN et a soutenu le projet avec son expertise en photographie et arts graphiques. Elle s’est particulièrement engagée à documenter les pratiques d’esclavage qui touchent les femmes nigériennes.

Apsatou Bagaya is a professional photographer from Niger. Having lived in Benin and Togo, she returned to Niger where she practices photography in all its forms. She is a private entrepreneur who works on commission for a wide range of employers. After winning the second prize in the LESLAN art competition, she joined the LESLAN team and supported the project with her expertise in photography and graphic arts. She is particularly committed to documenting slavery practices that affect Nigerien women.

 

Benedetta Rossi (Coordinator and Principal Investigator / Coordinatrice et investigatrice principale)

Benedetta Rossi est professeure à l’University College London (UCL), et avant ça à l’Université de Birmingham (Royaume Uni). Elle est historienne sociale, spécialisée sur l’histoire globale de l’esclavage, sur l’histoire de l’esclavage en Afrique, et sur l’histoire du Niger au XIX et XX siècles. Elle est l’auteur de From Slavery to Aid: Politics, Labour, and Ecology in the Nigérien Sahel, 1800-2000 (CUP, 2015) et elle a co-dirigé Les Mondes de l’Esclavage (Seuil, 2021). Elle travaille actuellement sur sa deuxième monographie intitulée Esclavage et émancipation au vingtième siècle en Afrique. En 2019, elle est chercheuse invitée à l’Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales (Paris). Elle coordonne le projet LESLAN en collaboration avec les coordinateurs nationaux et toute l’équipe LESLAN.

Benedetta Rossi is Associate Professor at University College London (UCL) and before this at the University of Birmingham (UK). She is a social historian, specialised on the global history of slavery, on slavery in Africa, and on the XIX and XX century history of Niger. She is the author of From Slavery to Aid: Politics, Labour, and Ecology in the Nigerien Sahel, 1800-2000 (CUP, 2015) and co-editor of Les Mondes de l’Esclavage (Seuil, 2021). She is currently working on her second monograph Slavery and Emancipation in Twentieth Century Africa. In 2019 she is Visiting Scholar at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris). She coordinates the LESLAN Project in collaboration with the national coordinators and entire LESLAN team. 

LESLAN Senior advisors (Moussa Zangaou, Seyni Moumouni)

 

Moussa Zangaou (senior advisor)

Moussa Zangaou est professeur et chef du département de sociologie du développement de l’Institut de recherche en sciences humaines (IRSH) de l’Université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey, ancien membre du Parlement, ancien vice-président du comité interparlementaire de l’Union Economique et Monétaire Ouest- Africaine (UEMOA) et membre de la Anti-slavery Taskforce du Niger. Le Professeur Zangaou conseille les coordinateurs sur l’impact des activités de LESLAN sur le développement et la recherche scientifique au Niger et facilite la coordination des activités de LESLAN avec l’IRSH.

Moussa Zangaou is university professor and Head of the Department of Development Sociology of the Institute of Research in the Humanities (IRSH) of Abdou Moumouni University, former member of parliament, former vice-chairman of the inter-parliamentary committee of the West Africa Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), and member of the national Antislavery Taskforce. Professor Zangaou advises the coordinators on the developmental and scientific impacts of LESLAN’s activities and facilitates the coordination of LESLAN and IRSH.

 

Seyni Moumouni (senior advisor)

Le professeur Seyni Moumouni est directeur de l’Institut de Recherche en Sciences Humaines (IRSH, Niamey). Historien spécialisé dans l’analyse de sources arabes pour l’histoire de l’Afrique de l’Ouest, le professeur Moumouni supervise la réalisation de l’exposition du projet à l’IRSH, apporte son expertise sur les sources arabes relatives à l’esclavage et facilite les relations avec les autorités religieuses islamiques au Niger.

Professor Seyni Moumouni is Director of the Institut de Recherche en Sciences Humaines (IRSH, Niamey). Historian specialising in the analysis of Arabic sources for the history of West Africa, Professor Moumouni oversees the implementation of the Project’s exhibition in IRSH, contributes his expertise on Arabic sources on slavery, and facilitates relations with Islamic religious authorities in Niger.

Ilgulas Weila

lguilas Weila: activiste en droits humains, membre fondateur et ancien président de l’Association Timidria. Fondateur et président de ORDH (Organisation pour la Restauration de la Dignité Humaine). Pour LESLAN il travaille sur la region de Tahoua.

Human rights activist, founding member and former President of Timidria. Founder and president of ORDH. For LESLAN he focuses on the Tahoua Region.

 

Aghali Agalher

 

Aghali Agalher: activiste en droits humains, ancien préfet et sous-préfet du département de Tchirozerine et ancien chef de ressources humaines d’Abalak. Pour LESLAN il travaille sur la region d’Agadez.

Human rights activist, former Prefect of the Department of Tchirozerine and Head of Human Resources in Abalack. For LESLAN he focuses on the Agadez Region.

 

Oumarou Moussa

Oumarou Moussa: doctorant au Département d’Histoire, Faculté des Lettres et Sciences Humaines, Université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey, Inspecteur pédagogique de l’enseignement secondaire et enseignant primaire et secondaire. Il est le chercheur principal de LESLAN sur les contextes Songhay-Djerma (région de Dosso).

PhD student in the Department of History, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Abdou Moumouni University of Niamey, Inspector of secondary education and primary and secondary teacher. He is LESLAN’s lead researcher on Songhay-Djerma contexts (Dosso region).

 

Hamissou Rhissa Achaffert

Hamissou Rhissa Achaffert: doctorant à l’Université de Bayreuth (Allemagne) et titulaire d’un Master en Sociologie et Anthropologie (sociologie de l’éducation). Pour LESLAN, il travaille dans la région de Maradi et soutient les aspects informatiques du projet au Niger.

PhD candidate at the University of Bayreuth (Germany) and holder of a Masters in Socio-Anthropology (Education). For LESLAN he works in the Maradi region and supports IT aspects of the project in Niger.

 

Aïcha Mohamed Kolankolan

Aïcha Mohamed Kolankolan: étudiante en Master au Département de Linguistique et Sciences du Langage à l’Université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey. Specialisation: Linguistique Tamasheq. Pour LESLAN, elle travaille sur les groupes touaregs de la région de Bankilare. Elle est membre de Timidria.

Master student in the Department of Linguistics and Language Sciences at Abdou Moumouni University of Niamey. Specialization: Tamasheq Linguistics. For LESLAN she focuses on Tuareg groups of the area of Bankilare. She is a member of Timidria.

 

Maimouna Maman Chaibou (janvier-février 2019)

Maimouna Maman Chaibou: chercheuse ayant récemment acquis un diplôme Master II en Sociologie à l’Université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey. Option: Espace-Société et Développement. Elle a travaillé dans des enquêtes au niveau national. Pour LESLAN, elle travaille dans les contextes Hausaphones de Zinder.

Researcher; holder of a Master II degree in Sociology at Abdou Moumouni University in Niamey. Option: Space-Society and Development. She has experience conducting research surveys at a national level. For LESLAN she works on Hausaphone contexts of Zinder.

 

Issoufou Mamoudou Altiné

Issoufou Mamoudou Altiné: étudiant en Master II en Sociologie et Anthropologie à l’Université de Niamey, option Master Recherche; agent enquêteur de terrain pour l’Organisation Internationale pour les Migrations (OIM). Il parle Fulfulde et Hausa et pour LESLAN travaille dans les régions de Bankilare et Niamey.

Master II student in Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Niamey, Master Research option; worked as researcher for the International Organization for Migration (IOM). He is fluent in Fulfulde and Hausa and for LESLAN he focuses on the regions of Bankilare and Niamey.

 

Boubacar Mounkaila Aïchatou

Étudiante en licence de Droit à l’Université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey, chercheuse pour le compte du Projet LESLAN, et stagiaire à l’Association Timidria, Boubacar Mounkaila Aïchatou est une nigérienne engagée pour la cause humaine et surtout pour celle de ses compatriotes victimes de crimes et délits d’esclavage.

Law student at Abdou Moumouni University of Niamey, researcher on behalf of the LESLAN Project, and intern at the Timidria Association, Boubacar Mounkaila Aïchatou is a Nigerien committed to the human cause and especially to that of her compatriots victims of crimes and crimes of slavery.

Moussa Hamidou Idrissa

Moussa est titulaire d’un Master 2 en Lettres, Arts et Communication, option Arts et Culture, Université A. Moumouni de Niamey-Niger. Il a travaillé comme journaliste et professeur de francais dans de lycees nigeriens. Pour l’organisation de l’exposition de LESLAN il coordonne la mobilisation du public et médiation culturelle, et contribue a la conception, le montage, et l’organisation de l’exposition.

Moussa holds a Master 2 degree in Letters, Arts and Communication, Arts and Culture option, A. Moumouni University of Niamey-Niger. He worked as a journalist and teacher of French in secondary schools in Niger. For the LESLAN exhibit he is responsible for the activities of public engagement and cultural mediation, and contributes to the design and organization of the exhibition.

 

Yacouba Ibrahim Oumarou

Yacouba (nom d’art: Sage Soldat) est titlaire de deux masters 2: en Droits des Affaires, Université Canadienne du Niger; et en Arts et Cultures, Université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey (en cours). Il est auteur et artiste et a animé des expositions et activités culturelles au Niger, en Cote d’Ivoire, et au Sénégal. Il a recu une formation de six mois en France au Centre National Dramatique d’Aubervilliers. Il est coordinateur du volet art et engagement public du projet LESLAN et curateur de l’exposition de LESLAN.

Yacouba (nom d’art: Sage Soldat) holds two masters 2: in Business Rights, Canadian University of Niger; and in Arts and Culture, Abdou Moumouni University of Niamey (in progress). He is an author and an artist and contributed to the organisation of exhibitions and cultural activities in Niger, Ivory Coast, and Senegal. He was trained in France at the Dramatic National Center of Aubervilliers. For LESLAN he coordinates the Art and Public Engagement Workpackage and is artistic curator of the exhibition.

 

Kiara Beaulieu

Kiara est doctorante au département de lettres classiques, histoire ancienne et archéologie de l’Université de Birmingham. Elle est titulaire d’un diplôme en gestion et conservation de musées, ainsi que d’un baccalauréat et d’une maîtrise en archéologie et en études anciennes. Elle a expérience dans la création d’expositions et le catalogage d’artefacts. Grâce à la collaboration avec le projet SLAFNET, elle rejoins LESLAN pour l’organisation de l’exposition a Niamey et la réalisation de l’exposition virtuelle en ligne.

Kiara is a PhD student at the Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology of the University of Birmingham. She holds a degree in museum management and curatorship, and a bachelors and masters in archaeology and ancient studies. She has experience creating exhibits and cataloguing artifacts. Thanks to collaboration with the SLAFNET Project, she joins LESLAN to support the organisation of the exhibition and contribute to the realisation of the ‘virtual exhibition’ online.

Nathalie Raunet Robert-Nicoud

Nathalie Raunet Robert-Nicoud est etudiante en doctorat à l’université de Birmingham dans le département d’études africaines et anthropologie (DASA), elle travaille sur la mobilité dans les espaces frontaliers en période électorale. Pour LESLAN, elle assiste les coordinateurs du projet dans les tâches administratives.

Ibrahim Inaboutou

Ibrahim Inaboutou est professeur de lycée à Niamey. Il est secrétaire général adjoint de Timidria. Pour LESLAN, il assiste les coordinateurs de projet dans leurs tâches administratives.

Ibrahim Inaboutou is a highschool teacher in Niamey. He is Deputy General Secretary of Timidria. For LESLAN he assists the project coordinators in their administrative tasks.

 

Habsatou Oumarou

Habsatou Oumarou est la trésorière de Timidria et en charge des rapports financiers pour LESLAN et du suivi financier et économique du projet.

Habsatou Oumarou is Timidria’s accountant and is in charge of financial reporting for LESLAN, as well as the economic and financial monitoring of project activities.

Melanie Horstead est directrice exécutive et fondatrice de l’ONG Talibe Trust. Elle est titulaire d’une maîtrise en Afrique et développement de l’Université de Birmingham (2020). Son travail se concentre sur le Sénégal et la région du Sahel en Afrique de l’Ouest. Pour LESLAN elle aide à gérer les finances, l’administration et l’organisation du projet et du site Web du projet .

Melanie Horstead is the CEO and Founder of the NGO Talibe Trust. She holds an MA in Africa and Development from the University of Birmingham (2020). Her work focuses on Senegal and the Sahel region of West Africa. She helps manage LESLAN Project finance, administration, organisation and to build and update the website.
