Le 13 mars 2023 l’IRSH a accueilli un atelier de recherche organisé dans le cadre de la collaboration entre le laboratoire LARSO (IRSH) et le Projet AFRAB. Les thèmes et les participants étaient aussi en continuité avec des recherches antérieurement menées dans le contexte du Projet LESLAN.
On March 13, 2023, IRSH hosted a research workshop organised as part of the collaboration between the LARSO laboratory (IRSH) and the AFRAB Project. Several participants had started working together on related topics in the context of the LESLAN Project.
A l’occasion de la Journée Internationale de la Femme, le Président de Timidria Ali Bouzou et la célèbre militante Hadijatou Mani ont été invités par le Lycée La Fontaine de Niamey pour présenter une projection du documentaire « Wahaici » réalisé par Apsatou Bagaya et produit dans le cadre du Projet LESLAN.
On occasion of International Women’s Day, Timidria’s President Ali Bouzou and the famous activist Hadijatou Mani were invited by the La Fontaine Highschool of Niamey to present a screening of the documentary « Wahaici » directed by Apsatou Bagaya and produced in the framework of the LESLAN Project.
Le 14 mars au Centre « Soleil d’Afrique » de Niamey aura lieu un atelier pour engager différentes parties concernées dans une réflexion sur les pratiques pour supprimer l’esclavage et ses séquelles au Niger. Cet atelier réalisera une consultation publique sur l’efficacité des stratégies visant à entraver l’esclavage, à soutenir les victimes et à protéger les groupes et individus plus vulnérables. Il discutera également des méthodes pour parvenir à la transformation des idéologies responsables pour la résilience de l’esclavage et de ses séquelles dans certaines régions et contextes du Niger et de la sous-région. Il ouvrira un espace de restitution et consultation avec les communautés de base des groupes affectés, en particulier les femmes survivantes qui souhaitent partager leur expérience passée et faire entendre leur voix non pas en tant que victimes, mais en tant que moteurs de changement. L’atelier présentera et discutera de manière critique les principaux résultats de cinq années de collaboration entre Timidria, l’IRSH et l’Université Abdou Moumouni au Niger, et l’UCL et l’Université de Birmingham au Royaume-Uni. On March 14 at the « Soleil d’Afrique » Center in Niamey, a workshop will be held to engage various parties concerned in a reflection on practices to eradicate slavery and its consequences in Niger. This workshop will carry out a public consultation on the effectiveness of strategies to prevent slavery, support victims and protect vulnerable groups and individuals. It will also discuss methods for achieving the transformation of ideologies responsible for the resilience of slavery and its legacies in certain regions and contexts of Niger and the sub-region. It will open a space for restitution and consultation with the grassroots communities of the affected groups, in particular women survivors who wish to share their past experience and make their voices heard not as victims, but as drivers of change. The workshop will present and critically discuss the main results of five years of collaboration between Timidria, IRSH and Abdou Moumouni University in Niger, and UCL and the University of Birmingham in the UK. Les chercheurs du LESLAN présenteront leurs travaux et participeront à un atelier de recherche aux côtés d’autres spécialistes de l’étude de l’islam et de l’abolitionnisme en Afrique de l’Ouest. L’atelier aura lieu dans le bâtiment IRSH au Petit Marché de Niamey le 13 mars et est co-organisé par le LARSO, l’IRSH et l’UCL avec le soutien du projet AFRAB.
LESLAN’s researchers will be presenting their work and participating in a research workshop alongside other specialists of the study of Islam and abolitionism in West Africa. The workshop will take place in the IRSH Building at the Pétit Marché in Niamey on 13 march and is co-organised by the LARSO, IRSH, and UCL with the support of the AFRAB Project.
Le documentaire ‘Wahaici’ sera projeté ce soir, vendredi 23 décembre 2022, à la Galerie Taweydo de Niamey dans le cadre de sa série ‘Les Nuits du Cinéma’. Le documentaire décrit les expériences de quatre femmes qui avaient été vendues enfants comme concubine ou ‘cinquième femmes’ (‘wahayou’) et qui ont lutté pour retrouver leur liberté en suivant différentes trajectoires soutenues par l’ONG Timidria. Le documentaire sera présenté par Apsatou Bagaya, productrice du film et co-coordinatrice du projet LESLAN2, qui répondra aux questions de la salla à la fin du film. Bagaya a récemment présenté ‘Wahaici’ à Bruxelles lors des ‘Cinema days’ le 15 octobre 2022.
The documentary ‘Wahaici’ will be screened tonight, Friday 23 December 2022, at the Gallery Taweydo of Niamey as part of its series ‘Cinema Nights’. The documentary describes the experiences of four women who had been sold as children and who struggled to regain their freedom by following different trajectories supported by the NGO Timidria. The documentary will be introduced by Apsatou Bagaya, its producer and co-coordinator of the LESLAN2 project, who will take questions at the end. Bagaya has recently presented ‘Wahaici’ in Brussels at the ‘Cinema days’ on 15 October 2022.

Le 26 novembre Oumarou Moussa a obtenu son diplôme de doctorat avec mention « très honorable » pour sa thèse intitulée « L’influence de l’islam sur la pratique et l’abolition de l’esclavage dans les sociétés touarègues et zarma-soŋay de l’Ouest nigérien depuis le XIXe siècle ». La thèse est une étude exceptionnellement originale de la mort lente de l’esclavage dans ceux deux sociétés. En effet, c’est la première thèse soutenue dans une université au Niger qui ose se focaliser sur ce qui pendant des décennies a été un sujet tabou : l’esclavage interne au pays et sa résilience jusqu’à nos jours malgré plusieurs mesures juridiques prises par les gouvernements successifs, coloniaux et indépendants, visés à éradiquer cette institution.
L’auteur fait des recherches sur l’esclavage au Niger depuis plus de 15 ans. C’était le sujet de sa maîtrise, qu’il a développé en collaborant avec l’initiative PER-Esclavage qui était un réseau de recherche centré sur l’Afrique de l’Ouest d’historiens travaillant sur l’esclavage dans la sous-région. Entre 2018 et 2022, il a été employé par le projet LESLAN, ce qui lui a permis de collecter et d’analyser une quantité substantielle de nouvelles preuves. Il est l’auteur principal de l’étude récemment publiée par le projet LESLAN « Etude sur l’Esclavage au Niger : témoignages, manifestations et causes ». Et il a intégré ce matériau dans le travail effectué pour sa thèse. M. Oumarou Moussa a donc saisi toutes les opportunités à sa portée pour approfondir sa compréhension de ce phénomène. Il a choisi de travailler comme militant-chercheur et a soutenu les efforts de Timidria et des abolitionnistes anti-esclavagistes dans son pays avec un engagement à ce jour unique parmi les historiens nigériens. Pour toutes ces raisons, cette thèse apporte une contribution majeure à l’historiographie régionale sur l’esclavage et ses transformations et héritages en Afrique de l’Ouest. Elle renforce un champ de recherche non seulement national, mais sous-régional, francophone et international.

On November 26, a PhD degree was conferred to Oumarou Moussa. The jury unanimously decided to award the diploma with a « very honourable » mention.
Oumarou Moussa’s doctoral thesis, entitled « The influence of Islam on the practice and abolition of slavery in Tuareg and Zarma-soŋay societies in western Niger since the 19th century » is a study of the history of the slow death of slavery in these two particular societies of western Niger. It is an exceptionally original study. It is the first thesis defended in a university in Niger that dares to focus on what for decades has been a taboo subject: internal slavery and its resilience until today despite several legal measures taken. by successive governments, colonial and independent, aimed at eradicating this institution.
The author has been researching slavery in Niger for over 15 years. This was the subject of his master’s degree, which he developed while collaborating with the PER-Esclavage initiative which was a West African-focused research network of historians working on slavery in the sub-Saharan Africa Region. Between 2018 and 2022 he was employed by the LESLAN project, which allowed him to collect and analyze a substantial amount of new evidence. He is the main author of the study recently published by the LESLAN project « Study on Slavery in Niger: testimonies, manifestations and causes ». And he integrated this material into the work done for his thesis. Mr. Oumarou Moussa has therefore seized every opportunity available to him to deepen his understanding of this phenomenon. He chose to work as an activist-researcher and supported the efforts of Timidria’s anti-slavery abolitionists in his country with a commitment to date unique among Nigerien historians. For all these reasons, this thesis makes a major contribution to the regional historiography on slavery and its transformations and legacies in West Africa. It strengthens a field of research that is not only national, but sub-regional and international.
